Today We are gonna talk about the recommended hardware requirements for a Network Attached Storage or NAS, I’m sure most of you know what a NAS is but for those of you who don’t – it’s exactly what it sounds like. a storage device which can be accessed through your internet or ethernet network. For more details you can check out this video (pointing towards top right)
So starting off with the difference, much like a custom PC – custom NAS gives you the option to choose which processor, motherboard or even graphics card you want – which is attached to the storage. Also because you can choose which components you want – you can also make this extremely cost effective. Much cheaper than prebuilt NAS

CPU for Custom NAS
Starting off with the Processor, For most home and small business users, a dual-core processor with a clock speed of at least 1.0 GHz is recommended. This will ensure that your NAS device can handle multiple data requests simultaneously without any lag or slowdown.
How much RAM would a NAS Storage System Require?
This Totally depends on your use case, whether you want to The more RAM you have, the more programs you can run simultaneously. For most users, at least 2GB of RAM is recommended. This amount of RAM is sufficient for browsing files, streaming media, and light data transfers. However, if you plan to use your NAS device for more intensive data transfers or media streaming, 4GB or even 8GB of RAM is recommended.
But if you’re not really familiar with servers, the setup can get a little tricky, but lucky for you – you have us, we ship Custom PCs & Servers across India with 3 years of onsite warranty and a 24 hour service response guarantee so you know who to get in touch with.
STORAGE
For NAS devices, HDDs are recommended for their larger storage capacity and reliability. A minimum storage capacity of 2TB is recommended for home users, but larger capacities are available for small businesses.
What is RAID?
RAID, or Redundant Array of Independent Disks, is a method of storing data across multiple hard drives. RAID can improve data reliability, increase data transfer speeds, and provide data redundancy in case of a drive failure. RAID configurations like RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 5 are supported by the majority of NAS devices. The most basic configuration, RAID 1, mirrors data across two drives. While requiring at least three drives, RAID 5 offers a good balance of data redundancy and storage capacity.
Do I need Network Connectivity?
The majority of NAS units have an Ethernet port for wired connections. A gigabit Ethernet port is advised for the majority of home and small business users. For data transfers and media streaming, this will offer a quick and dependable connection. Although some NAS devices also support Wi-Fi, a wired connection is almost always more dependable.
Operating System
Much like a custom PC – NAS gives you the option to choose which processor, motherboard or even graphics card you want – which is attached to the storage. Also because you can choose which components you want – you can also make this extremely cost effective. Much cheaper than pre built NAS. You can also run a variety of different operating systems, like Linux, FreeBSD, Windows – and the one we[theMVP] use that is TruNAS. These operating systems are specifically designed for NAS devices and provide features such as remote access, data backup, and media streaming.
